Access to Seafood Project

The Regional District partnered with Greenways Land Trust and the Strathcona Food Security Project to secure a Plan H grant to research obstacles to the sale of fresh seafood off the boat to local communities.

The project came up with a number of recommendations to improve access to seafood in our region:

  • Public education about the real cost of seafood

  • Further engagement with provincial agencies and advocating for clear, well-publicized guidelines on boat-to-table regulations

  • Education for those in the fishing industry on regulations for off-vessel vending and customer connections/marketing techniques

  • A large-scale project researching the commercial fisheries licencing system and whether changes would facilitate an increase in direct sales
