Urban Indigenous Housing & Wellness Coalition

In partnership with Lachwiltach Family Life Society and Sasamans Society, the Health Network started supporting a series of meetings relating to urban Indigenous housing. This group has been meeting monthly and has secured both Island Health Wellness funding and a UBCM grant to continue to convene conversations about how to address urban indigenous housing in a good way.

The aim is to understand and meet the housing needs of urban indigenous populations. Meeting monthly the Coalition is establishing a Terms of Reference, has hired a coordinator and is developing strategies to increase awareness and advocacy for the social determinants of health for urban Indigenous populations.

In July 2020, the City of Campbell River consulted this group for input regarding the new supportive housing development at 580 Dogwood. In December 2020 the group presented to the Campbell River City Council. Watch the presentation here. Below is a video created to illustrate and share about the challenges of urban Indigenous populations living in Campbell River.
